Chamber Music Weekend

At First Sight is an intensive four-day chamber music program designed for young advanced and intermediate string players, ages 13-18. A limited number of advanced pianists will be accepted. AFS is unique in its emphasis on developing sight-reading. In addition, professional musicians coach chamber ensembles and give seminars and master classes. At First Sight students make new friends the best way possible, by making great music with them. During the workshop each student participates in several different chamber groups, and is part of the AFS Chamber Orchestra. Each evening includes "Make Music", an opportunity to play chamber music informally with coaches and staff.

At First Sight is also unique in its focus on connecting with the Giver of the gift of music. Morning Descant, which includes worship and hymn singing, sets the tone for the day. Students share their gift with others by playing for a nursing home or assisted living facility at least once during the week. At First Sight is non-denominational. Students of all faiths and all ethnic backgrounds are welcome. The age range is typcally 13 through 18, although students are admitted by ability level, not age. While encouraging each student's best effort, AFS is non-competetive. The atmosphere is intentionally supportive and cooperative.
